What is Cardboard Waste Recycling?

For nearly a century, cardboard has been one of the most widely used materials in the modern world. Most retail and wholesale commodities in the commercial world come in cardboard packaging. Cardboard is a high-quality paper-based recyclable material. Corrugated cardboard and grey paperboard are the most prevalent types, which are used for paper boxes and packaging.

  • Multiple corrugated and flat layers of cardboard makeup corrugated cardboard. The material for cardboard boxes is corrugated cardboard. The material is thick, sturdy, and solid, making it ideal for transporting things.
  • Paperboard, also known as fiberboard, is a recycled cardboard product that resembles conventional paper but is slightly thicker. This grey foldable paperboard is commonly used for cereal boxes and shoe boxes. Containerboard is another name for the material. It’s tough, but it’s more prone to tearing than corrugated cardboard.

What Types of Cardboard Can be Recycled?

Cardboard is made of paper, which comes from wood fibers. Most cardboard, including boxes, plates, tubes, fiberboard, and paperboard, can be recycled. However, grease or oil-contaminated cardboard, such as a pizza box, cannot be recycled into high-quality cardboard. Wet cardboard should not be recycled because it can clog the sorting equipment used in the early stages of the cardboard recycling process.

Cardboard recycling is environmentally healthy because it relieves strain on logging trees. Because of the natural wood fibers, cardboard is a great material to recycle. To make one ton of virgin cardboard (cardboard that has not been recycled), 3 tons of wood are required. Because of this, it is very important to recycle cardboard waste to make new cardboard.

What are The Steps of Recycling Cardboard?

Collection and Sorting

In the recycling process, this is the initial phase. We’ll collect the waste from your facilities at an agreed time. All of this is then transported and delivered to mills where it is recycled.

The recycling of cardboard continues with this phase. The materials added to the corrugated boxes are now sorted or segregated into box cardboard and corrugated cardboard. Corrugated cardboard is often thick and stiff, with a lot of paper pulp. When contrasted to corrugated cardboard, box cardboard is often thin and flexible.

Shredding and Pulping

After the cardboard waste has been separated, they are shredded into extremely small pieces. Following this, the fragments are combined with water and chemicals to form a pulp. The fragments of paper are broken down and turned into a slurry by adding water and chemicals. Pulping is the common name for this procedure. This is followed by the addition of additional pulp to the mixture. The new pulp is mainly made from wood chips.

Filtering and de-inking

The filtering process is now underway. Filters must be used to remove contaminants such as tape, glue, plastics, staples, and strings from the pulp. Plastics float to the top of the filters at the end of the filtration process, while heavy objects like staples fall to the bottom. The de-inking procedure follows the filtration procedure. The filtered pulp is passed through a flotation device at this point. The pulp is treated with a series of chemicals to remove the ink and dyes once more. The finished product is ready for the final stage of processing.

Final Stage

The cleaned final product is then re-mixed with additional materials before being dried on a heated conveyor belt and cylindrical surface. During the drying process, the pulp is also sent through an automated machine to remove any surplus water. This facilitates the conversion of lengthy rolls into solid sheets known as inner boards and mediums. These interior planks are now bonded and put together to form a new piece of paper.
